Welcome to the Official Website of
Orillia's Municipal Heritage Committee
We are a group of concerned citizens interested in the documentation and preservation of Orillia's heritage. We provide an advisory role to Orillia's City Council.
Orillia is located between Lake Couchiching and Lake Simcoe in Ontario's Lake Country. With a vast history that includes industrial and commercial entrepreneurs due to our central location and transportation routes between Toronto and Georgian Bay, Orillia has great historical records of homes, buildings and streetscapes.
Now a popular vacation spot and gateway to the Muskokas, our more recent history includes our location on the Trent-Severn Waterway, the birthplace of Gordon Lightfoot and the Ontario Provincial Police Museum.
National Historical sites have been erected in Orillia to commemorate historic visits by explorer Samuel de Champlain and the summer home of famed Canadian humourist Stephen Leacock.
Down our main street (Mississaga Street) and our residential neighbourhoods, you will see that the city retains much of the wonderful architecture and charm of its early boom years. |

Celebrate 100 Years of Sunshine Sketches with Doors Open Mariposa!
Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town, Stephen Leacock’s classic work of humour, turns 100 this year. To help celebrate the Municipal Heritage Committee is re-working our customary Doors Open event to honour the Leacock legacy. Visitors will have the chance to walk in the footsteps of Canada’s most famous humourist and see the real Mariposa, including the actual buildings and locations depicted in the book.
This is a unique opportunity as many of the participating properties have not taken part in Doors Open activities before.
If you are interested in helping bring Mariposa to life contact Michael Martyn at 705 325 4530 or mmartyn@orillia.ca.
